April 20, 2023 - Following the announcements of the Covid 19 public health emergency transition roadmap that decreases services and support to communities impacted by Covid 19, the National Alliance for Filipino Concerns (NAFCON), GABRIELA Portland and Migrante Portland convened to launch the Care for Caregivers Campaign. The campaign aims to promote and uphold the rights and welfare of Filipino health workers and establish an advocacy taskforce and wage legislative campaign for industry regulations.

In the United States, the elderly population will reach 71 million in 2030 which results in an increasing demand for migrant Filipino health workers. They play a crucial role in providing care and company to our family members who need additional day to day support. Despite their crucial role in the economy, 75% of community members impacted by Covid 19 and served by the Filipino Bayanihan Center in Oregon were caregivers, shedding light on the impacts of health and inadequate support for workers in the industry. Additionally, the lack of regulations result in wages below the living wage, misclassification, and situations of wage theft.

As we continue to witness our fellow Filipinos endure hardship and struggles, we now take this step to encourage meaningful change. We believe that caregivers are also deserving of care, economic stability, and dignity in their places of work! For us, this means uplifting migrant stories and organizing to improve caregivers’ livelihood in Oregon. Join the fight for the people’s right to health!
